Grid Lines

When you’re planning a quilt, sometimes you want to focus on the structure and sometimes you just want to see how your fabric choices are really working together. That’s exactly why we added Grid Lines to the Quilt Planner.

What are Grid Lines

Grid lines are the thin lines you see on your quilt design that represent the actual pattern layout such as each block, section, or unit that makes up the quilt. They’re incredibly helpful when:

  • Understanding block placement
  • Checking alignment and proportions
  • Following the pattern’s construction

But when you’re deep into fabric auditioning, those lines can sometimes distract from the overall look.

How the Grid Lines Button Works

The Grid Lines feature is a simple toggle that lets you switch between technical and visual views of your quilt. Here’s how it works:

Click the Grid Lines button once

  • The grid lines disappear
  • You’ll see your quilt without layout lines
  • This makes it easier to evaluate fabric, color balance, and overall design

Click the Grid Lines button again

  • The grid lines return
  • You’re back to viewing the true pattern layout

That’s it! No settings to manage, no changes saved permanently, just a quick visual toggle whenever you need it.

When to Turn Grid Lines Off

Removing grid lines is especially helpful when:

  • Comparing similar fabrics or colorways
  • Evaluating contrast and value
  • Stepping back to see the “big picture”
  • Deciding if a fabric swap really works

Think of it as switching from construction mode to design mode.

When to Turn Them Back On

Grid lines are best left on when:

  • Verifying block placement
  • Confirming pattern accuracy
  • Reviewing layout details before ordering

You can move back and forth as often as you like while planning.

A Small Button with a Big Impact

The Grid Lines feature is one of those subtle tools that makes quilt planning feel smoother and more intuitive giving you control over how much detail you see at any moment.

Try toggling it on and off the next time you’re auditioning fabrics and see the difference for yourself!

Happy Quiltstering!
