Adjust the Background Lighting

Ever find yourself planning a quilt with light fabrics and thinking, “Why is this so hard to see?”  We’ve got you covered!

Inside the Quilt Planner, there’s a simple little tool that can make a big difference when working with lighter colors; the Background Lighting button.

Where to Find It

Look for the light bulb icon in the Quilt Planner toolbar. This is your Background Lighting control.

What it Does

The Background Lighting button lets you darken the area behind your quilt, making light fabrics stand out more clearly while you design.

This is especially helpful when:

  • Planning quilts with white, cream, low-volume, or pastel fabrics
  • Comparing subtle color changed
  • Checking contrast and value balance

How it Works

Each click adjusts the background lighting level:

  1. First click – Slightly darkens the background

  2. Second click – Darkens it a bit more

  3. Third click – The darkest background setting

  4. Fourth click – Resets back to the normal background

You can click through the options until you find the level that makes your quilt easiest to see.

Why You'll Love This Feature

  • Makes light fabrics easier to evaluate

  • Helps you spot contrast issues before you commit

  • Lets you plan with confidence especially for quilts with soft or subtle palettes

Think of it like turning down the lights so your quilt can really shine.

Quiltster Pro Tip

Try toggling the background lighting while swapping fabrics in your project. It’s a great way to quickly see how small changes affect the overall look of your quilt.

Planning should be fun and frustration-free. Don’t forget to give that little light bulb a click the next time you’re working with lighter fabrics it might just become one of your favorite Quilt Planner tools!

Happy Quiltstering!
